At Carrollwood Smiles, a new-patient emergency visit starts with a $40 exam and X-ray, and that $40 is credited toward your treatment if you have it done the same day (limited time offer). What you pay after that depends on what's causing the problem and how it needs to be treated.
Here's how emergency dental costs work, and how to keep yours down.
What affects the cost of an emergency visit
- The exam and X-ray. This is how we find the cause. For new patients at our office, it's $40.
- The treatment you need. A lost filling is a much smaller job than a tooth that needs a root canal or removal.
- Your insurance. Many PPO plans cover emergency exams and X-rays, and part of the treatment. Coverage varies, so check your plan.
- How quickly you're seen. Waiting often makes a problem bigger. A small cavity or crack can turn into an infection that needs more treatment.
Common emergency treatments
- Filling or bonding for a lost filling, chipped tooth, or small break
- Re-cementing or replacing a crown that came off or broke
- Root canal when an infection or deep crack reaches the nerve
- Tooth extraction when a tooth can't be saved. We do extractions, including wisdom teeth, in our office, with no referral needed.
- Treating an infection to bring down swelling and pain
At your visit, we'll explain your options and what each costs before we start any treatment.
If you have dental insurance
We're in network with most PPO plans, including Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, United Concordia, Humana, BlueCross BlueShield, and Ameritas. We file the claim for you. Call (813) 269-4000 to check your plan before you come in.
If you don't have insurance
You still have options:
- In-house discount plan: savings on care at our office, without insurance
- CareCredit: financing for dental care
- Sunbit: checking your eligibility won't affect your credit score
- We also accept cash and major credit cards.
Emergency room vs. emergency dentist
For a toothache, broken tooth, or dental infection, a dentist is usually the faster and less expensive choice. Emergency rooms typically can't repair teeth, so you'd still need a dental visit afterward. Go to the ER for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a possible broken jaw.
